Why Comic Shops Can’t Afford Larger Discounts

9:25 pm in News by Brian Garside

I recently sent out a survey (here is the survey, and here are the results), and one of the choices I let people choose was “give a larger discount”. I also suggested we might start a referral program, and the overwhelming choice there was “give a % discount on my subscriptions”.

Unfortunately I don’t think it’s possible to do either one of those things, but let me explain why I am not ridiculously rich from my comics empire.

iSwitched or How I Moved to a Mac

9:23 pm in How To's by Brian Garside

I have been using some flavour of Windows since version 1.2, but before that, I used DOS. I played with OS2 once upon a time, I’ve had dalliances with Atari, Commodore, Unix, Red Hat, Lindows, Tivo, Ubuntu, and yes for a time I played with Macs as far back as the OS8 days. At TSN we had an eMac for doing testing, and I pretty much loathed that machine because while it was pretty as all heck, it spent a LOT of time with a beach ball whirling (there is a myth out there that Mac’s don’t crash…they do, however their crashes are prettier than blue screens of death).

How to Get a Job in Web Design

1:47 am in How To's by Brian Garside

(Originally posted on brian.garsideweb.com) I like hiring people right out of school.  For one thing it brings a great energy to a team to have someone young with new ideas.  For another, it’s a chance to shape someone who hasn’t picked up years of bad habits (and who may impart some good habits on me and my team).  I also think it’s my duty to give others the same breaks that were afforded me early in my career.

You’ve finished up your classes, you’ve read a bunch of stuff on your own (including Steve Krug’s Don’t Make Me ThinkDan Cederholm’s Bulletproof Web DesignAndy Budd’s CSS Mastery) and you’ve been networking, you’ve been twittering, you’ve met some people, got a couple of leads, and now you’ve sent out your resumes.  You’re well on your way to getting your first job in web design.

Now you’re ready for your first job interview, so here’s some tips for you to make sure that first interview goes really well. Read the rest of this entry →

RadicalHive lives!

6:01 pm in News by Brian Garside

Radical Hive is an idea I’ve had since 1997, which started to crystalize in my head in 2006. I know a ton of brilliant and creative web people, what if those people came together in one collective to do brilliant things together? What if they took their lofty ambitions, and made them reality? What if instead of one, they were many.

What would happen if you set that hive loose on the world?

It would be different. It would be incredible. It might just be Radical.

This is Radical Hive.

Together we are greater than the sum of our parts.
