The HiveMind of Brian Garside
On February 16th 2001 Jeffery Zeldman posted an article called “To Hell with Bad Browsers” on A List Apart. It was an eye opening experience for me, and was the piece of the puzzle to why accessibility and standards compliant websites were a must have going forward. The title was memorable enough that it’s stuck with me all this time.
At the time I had just finished up the launch of TSNMAX, and the CEO of Bell Globe Media, Lib Gibson, was giving me a list of all of the problems that TSNMAX had with Netscape 4.7, which was her sole browser of choice. The browser was dead in the water at the time, and the “To Hell With Bad Browsers” article gave me a ton of ammunition.
Fast Forward seven years, and we’re in the same boat, except this time with IE 6. I hope that this treatise can be used by other developers to convince their bosses that it’s time to kill IE 6 in the corporate world. Read the rest of this entry »
Star Wars the Force Unleashed as a game is a good, but not great game. Star Wars the Force Unleashed as a cannonical movie is incredible. The gameplay at times is fantastic, but at times so broken and repetitive that it’s almost not worth playing through another level to get to the cutscene and story.
Almost not worth playing, fortunately for the Force Unleashed, the story that is told in the game is so good, that slogging through another impossible task is worth it. Read the rest of this entry »
Yoda gets curb stomped from Brian Garside on Vimeo.
It’s a senseless tragedy. Poor little Yoda was just sitting there doing nothing, when suddenly…Kaylin happened.
It’s like a scene from Dagobah History X.
This little movie was created on my new Flip Video Ultra, which I’ll post a review of soon (it’s pretty frigging awesome).
We had planned to go to the Western Fair on Friday, but because it was such a miserable day, we decided to hold off until Saturday. We left our house around 11 Saturday morning and arrived at 11:30, greeted as we were by a sleepy, quiet little affair. Hours later the place would be a booming madhouse, but for those first few hours, we had the joy of non-existant lines, sparsely trafficked walkways, and easy to find seating.
It was a good decision. Read the rest of this entry »
I love Google, I love the way they come up with new innovations, and I love the way that when they realize an innovation isn’t panning out, they abandon it (see the Google Browser Sync). With that said, I’m not terribly excited about Google Chrome.
The world doesn’t really need a new web browser.
Firefox is an awesome browser. IE 8 sounds like it will be pretty good. The Mac has Safari (although I find it pretty crappy), then there’s Opera the also-ran.
We really need another choice that does a bunch of different things in its own way? Really? Read the rest of this entry »
I managed to get a fair amount of gaming in this summer, much to my wife’s chagrin. The majority of it is all casual, or quick games that I can play for ten or twenty minute stretches in between all of the other stuff I do, but it’s fun nonetheless.
Here’s my list of games I’ve played over the summer. Read the rest of this entry »
Here’s a bunch of web links I’ve been looking at this week.
How to Add Drop Shadows to Menus or Windows with CSS
This one looks cool as I consider ways of improving my various sites and consider how to make stuff a little more graphical while still being semantic and clean.
UI is the Killer Feature
Yeah it is! You can’t have usability without a user, and you can’t have a user interface without considering usability.
Panic - Coda one window web development
This looks really cool, but it’s Mac Only, and it’s not really for me. ![]()
How to use WordPress as a Truly Customized CMS (Multiple Headers, Footers, Sidebars and more!)
This is great, I love WordPress, and I’d love to use it as a more full fledged CMS for other sites. This shows you just how to do that.
To Hell with Bad Browsers
I’m writing an article on why people should abandon IE 6, and move on to IE 7 at the very least. It’s based in a large part on Jeffery Zeldman’s awesome article here.
Well, another Fan Expo has come and gone, and having taken Monday to recuperate, I’m ready to put my thoughts down for this year.
It was good, but not great. I worked a lot, and saw loads of people, but it wasn’t quite as good as last year financially. There were a few surprises as to what sold, and there was one book that I wasn’t expecting to do as well as it did which shocked pretty much every retailer I spoke to. Read the rest of this entry »
I’m off to Toronto for Fan Expo Canada where I’ll be representing All New Comics with Al, the littlest All New Comics fan. I’m really looking forward to the show, and having 2 nights in a hotel won’t hurt either. Friday night it’s just me and my pillow, but Saturday afternoon Char’s coming down and crashing in my swinging hotel pad! Read the rest of this entry »
Apparently there’s a petition out on the interwebs asking mean old Warner Brothers to keep the sanctity of Zack Snyder’s upcoming Watchmen movie in tact and allow a 3 hour cut to be released theatrically.
Watchmen is one of my favourite graphic novels of all time, it’s a fantastic read and it totally re-invented comics in the 1980’s. It stands on its own as a piece of graphic fiction. I’m really excited about the movie, it looks like Snyder really “gets” the concept, and has nailed the look. So would I accept a 3 hour cut?
I say thee NAY! Read the rest of this entry »
